River's Edge also hosts a Showmanship Club. This
meets Sunday afternoons usually around 4 and
runs until about 7. Participants are assigned a
horse, (or are welcome to bring their own with
proof of a negative Coggins dated within a year).
They learn to groom, clean stalls, bathe, and show
their horses in the halter classes, showmanship
classes and in-hand trail classes. Cost for each
participant is $10. The Club is open to children 6
and up through Adults. The goal of some of our
participants is to show at the VHSA Shows in
Lyndonville, VT. Please call ahead to confirm we
are meeting that day, as Show Season is here, we
no longer meet every Sunday, 603-298-9053.
Spectators are always welcome for free.
(We are taking a break and will resume this
program in March. Thank you.)
Birthday Parties are available!!!
We host Birthday Parties with Pony Rides and Cart Rides.
We provide an ice cream cake, drinks, decorations, a present
for the birthday child, and goodie bags for the guests.
Parties last between 2 1/2 and 3 hours long for up to 10
guests for $225.00. (Each additional guest is $5, we need an
accurate count in advance to be sure we supply ample
amounts of cake and prizes.)
The Riding Academy at River's Edge Stables
strives to give students a basic working
knowledge of how to ride. Each student is taught
to perform a posting trot regardless of what seat
they may choose, then, whether they find
themselves on a trail in the Australian Outback,
or going around the show ring, they can ride
comfortably and in control of their mount.
Here is a basic overview of our program and what we require
from students at each level:
Beginning riders, of any age (we welcome students as young as
3), are required to be able to steer, stop, walk, and do a posting
trot consistently, without holding onto the saddle with their
hands, before they are allowed to go around the arena without
the close supervision of a 'header', (this is someone who stays
by the horse close enough to stop the horse or help balance a
rider should they need it). When the student can confidently
stop, walk a serpentine, post down 2 long sides of the arena, all
without any assistance from their header, they are considered
Advanced Beginners.
This is the point when students can start to decide which
discipline they would like to learn, Saddleseat, Western, or
Huntseat. Much of this decision depends on how the rider
naturally carries themselves and what type of horse they enjoy
riding. Saddleseat riders will now learn to handle double reins,
and Western riders will begin learning to sit a horse's jog.
Once the student becomes an advanced beginner, they are
welcome to join our Show Team. Sometimes Leadline
contenders are still being supervised by a Header because they
do not have the strength or size to control a pony who gets
spooked by something.
Advanced Beginners work on recognizing their diagonals at a
trot. They begin to perform simple patterns, and refine their
steering and posting skills. When these students can repeatedly
perform a trotting serpentine pattern at a consistent speed with
the correct changes of diagonals on several different mounts,
then we consider them as Intermediate students.
Here Huntseat riders will begin basic work with ground poles
and very low crossrails.
Intermediate Students have the goal of beginning canter work.
Although they still do a lot of trotting work, including
performing a posting trot without stirrups, this is when students
are allowed to learn to canter. If these students are on the Show
Team, they may still compete at a walk/trot level until they are
solid in their canter work. They must know their leads, and
perform patterns using all gaits - walk, trot, and canter before
being allowed to show at a canter.
Huntseat riders will now begin some actual course jumping,
Saddleseat Riders will perfect their equitation patterns, while
Western riders will learn to neckrein and do simple reining
patterns.
Advanced Students are able to perform consistently and safely
at all gaits with and without stirrups. Advance students are
taught to work horses in a manner which teaches the horses
exercises such as leg yielding, sidepasses, pivots, flying changes,
etc.
Our program is designed to teach safety, confidence, and
consideration of the horse at all levels and disciplines of riding.
If the student cannot competently and consistently perform the
required tasks for a level, they will not be allowed to advance to
the next level, (such as if a huntseat rider cannot post without
holding on to the saddle, they will not be allowed to begin work
with ground poles or go around the arena on their own.)
Students from other riding programs or bringing their own
horse must meet the same requirements, so for example, even if
you or your child is cantering in another program or at home,
until our requirements can be met, the student won't be allowed
to canter here.

required, no sandals or Crocs, some type of boot
with a 1/2 inch heel is best.
